A New Year, A Fresh Start For Animal Protection

January 24, 2012

So much progress was made last year for animals. This year should be even better. So many awful things continue to happens to animals every day. Abuse, testing, etc. Animals don’t deserve to be treated that way. They are living, breathing creatures that deserve to have the same right as everyone else. Let’s make this year worthwhile. For the animals.

Halloween for Pets

October 30, 2010

Although Halloween is a very fun holiday for people, it’s dangerous for animals. It’s better to keep them inside and away from all danger. People think it’s funny to mess with them, and since it’s dark all around, and you never know what kind of people are around you, it’s better to take precautions.

Canadian Seal Slaughter

June 27, 2010

Canada has always been a country that slaughters seals for their fur. This year, 80 percent of the seals that were supposed to be slaughtered,  were spared. That’s great!! The fight isn’t over yet. It won’t end until they stop completely. Please help.

Elephant Abuse

June 27, 2010

Ringling circus is apparently abusing their elephants. Do not support the abuse by going to their circuses. It’s not worth it. Protect the elephants. Don’t let the abuse continue. I’ll never go to another circus again.

Oil Spill

June 27, 2010

So, there’s a huge oil spill in the gulf. Not good. I’m right by it. Hoping it gets stopped fast. Plus, a ton of animals are getting caught in it. Some are able to be saved, and others don’t get so lucky. This is causing a lot of animal deaths.

California Chihuahuas Arrive at the ASPCA

January 10, 2010

On January 6, the ASPCA Adoption Center welcomed 15 Chihuahuas who flew from California to the Big Apple in search of new forever homes. The dogs originated from the City of San Francisco Animal Care & Control, and their in-cabin transportation was donated by Virgin Airlines. After some post-travel rest and relaxation, the tiny pups will be made available for adoption next week at the ASPCA in Manhattan. Over the past year, California shelters have seen a dramatic increase in Chihuahua intakes—this toy breed now makes up more than 30% of the state’s shelter dog population. While demand for Chihuahuas has declined in much of the Golden State, their popularity in New York City is as high as ever. “They’re portable, and people like portability in the city,” said Gail Buchwald, Senior Vice President for the ASPCA Adoption Center in New York City. Aside from easily fitting in a carrier for a subway ride, their small size is ideal for living in compact apartments. Gail adds: “We are glad to be given this opportunity to help New Yorkers get the small dogs they want, and at the same time, help find loving homes for San Francisco’s homeless animals.”

Dawn Donates money to animals caught in oil spills

July 23, 2009

It’s so sad when animals are caught in oil spills. Some animals even die because they don’t get help soon enough. Now, the dishwashing soap, Dawn, donates $1.00 to animals caught in oil spills, with every purchase. So, look out for that special dawn with pictures of animals, and help donate money!!

Ringling Bros. Beats Elephants With Bullhooks in Breaking New Investigation

July 22, 2009

Meet Tonka, a 25-year-old elephant who has been used by Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey Circus since 1989. Since Tonka was born at Circus World—a failed circus theme park built by the owner of Ringling, who later sold it to the Mattel toy company―she has been denied all that is natural and important to her just so that she can perform meaningless, repetitive “tricks” for Ringling’s audience. Tonka is one of 11 elephants whose plight we documented during our new undercover investigation inside Ringling.

In 2009, an undercover PETA investigator documented how Ringling treats Tonka and other animals who are forced to perform for the circus. Our investigator captured on video numerous Ringling workers beating and whipping these sensitive, intelligent animals dozens of times in venues across the country.

The new investigation video shows elephants who are struck on the head, face, ears, trunk, and legs with a bullhook—a heavy, hard object resembling a fireplace poker with a sharp, steel hooked end—and other abusive training tools. We also documented 30 separate occasions when elephants and one tiger were whipped, sometimes on the face.

During our investigation, Tonka was repeatedly captured on video engaging in “stereotypic” behaviors strongly suggesting her severe psychological distress, yet despite her condition, she was forced to perform for crowds night after night. Ringling’s crew didn’t appear to care if Tonka was suffering mentally or physically—the show had to go on.

While a verdict is pending on a lawsuit alleging that Ringling’s use of steel-barbed bullhooks, electric prods, and shackles violates federal law, the outcome might not be enough to help Tonka and the other elephants on Ringling’s Red Unit whom angry circus thugs may be beating right now.

Visit the website, RinglingBeatsAnimals.com to watch the undercover footage and write to the secretary of agriculture to demand that the USDA seize the elephants in Ringling’s hand immediately. Take action now to help these elephants. Every minute that passes might mean another beating for Tonka and her companions.

Record-Breaking Dog Fighting Raid Leads to Nearly 500 Rescues

July 21, 2009

Last week’s multi-state dog fighting raid, the largest federal and state agency crackdown on dog fighting in U.S. history, has resulted in the rescue of nearly 500 dogs, most of whom are Pit Bulls. At the Humane Society of Missouri (HSMO), which is housing more than 400 dogs, 14 puppies were born last week, adding to the overall number of dogs seized.

The operation spanned eight states—Missouri, Illinois, Iowa, Texas, Oklahoma, Arkansas, Nebraska and Mississippi—and news reports indicate that a total of 26 arrests have been made. Because dog fighting is a felony in all 50 states, if convicted of animal fighting charges, those arrested each face up to five years in prison.

According to the ASPCA’s Dr. Randall Lockwood, Senior Vice President of Anti-Cruelty Field Services, who was on-site in Missouri, not all dogs seized in raids have been used directly in fights. “Some are breeders—they do not fight, but produce litters of fresh fighters. Others are bait dogs. They lack the bloodlust and so serve as punching bags in training fights. Such dogs often get the worst of it.” Although the task of evaluating all of the seized dogs will be enormous, Dr. Lockwood notes, “At the very least, we’re honoring these animals by caring for them.”

The dogs are being sheltered in a secure St. Louis facility under the direction of HSMO’s Animal Cruelty Task Force. Each dog has been examined by a veterinarian and has received an individual medical plan. All have been microchipped and treated for parasites and continue to receive nutritious food, fresh water and a safe place to sleep.

Meanwhile, additional aid is desperately needed. HSMO is actively seeking rescue groups who can take in some of the dogs. During the next several weeks, a team of pet behavior experts, including HSMO behavior staff, Dr. Lockwood and other ASPCA experts, will evaluate each dog to determine suitability for possible placement with qualified rescue groups or experienced individual adopters.

A complete veterinary and behavior report for each dog will be submitted to the U.S. Attorney’s office, which will provide information to the courts for the final determination for each animal.

Hi everyone

July 21, 2009

I know that it’s been such a long time since I’ve posted. New things will e coming in soon, so keep watching. I’ll be sure to get news about the latest things.

ASPCA Happy Tails: Home, Sweet Home

April 18, 2009

Having an animal companion go missing is one of the most terrifying realities a pet parent can face. Proper ID tags and microchipping have proven essential in reuniting lost pets with their families—in the recent case of one missing California puppy, however, it was the ASPCA MySpace page that helped bring her home!

On March 3, two days after being adopted, nine-month-old Chihuahua mix Buei Buei (pronounced Bebe) escaped from her Corona, CA, home through a window left open a crack when owners Xinfeng Liu and his girlfriend went out for a few hours. After returning to find their puppy gone, the couple spent the next few days frantically knocking on neighbors’ doors and calling local animal shelters. Meanwhile, Buei Buei had wandered to the freeway two miles away.

At 6:30 the following morning, Yvonne Ansite was driving home from her shift at a Corona Wal-Mart. “About a quarter of a mile onto the freeway, I saw a little white puppy. She was almost hit a few times,” Yvonne remembers. “I pulled over to pick her up and she climbed right into my car.”

When Yvonne arrived home, she and her sister searched the Internet for a local animal shelter where they could report the found pup. As their search proved unsuccessful, they emailed a request for help to the ASPCA MySpace page. Elyse Orecchio, Associate Editor of Social Media, directed them to the Find a Shelter tool at ASPCA.org, a database of more than 3,000 animal care facilities across the country. “I was touched by Yvonne’s determination to reunite the pup with her pet parents,” Orecchio comments.” I’m so glad our friends on social networks like MySpace feel they can reach out to us for help—and that we can give it to them!”

Says Yvonne, “We used the shelter locator to get the phone number of Corona Animal Control, and that was the key that helped reunite the puppy with her family.” After Buei Buei was dropped off, one of the shelter’s animal trainers, aware of the missing Chihuahua mix, contacted Liu. On March 7, pup and owner were reunited.

Not every pet parent is as lucky. To increase the chances of bringing a lost pet home, please make sure your animal companion has proper ID tags and a microchip with updated information.

Manhattan Man Arrested for Beating Dog and Girlfriend

April 18, 2009

Early last week, ASPCA Humane Law Enforcement Special Agent Debbie Koch arrested Manhattan resident Richard Smith, 24, on multiple charges related to domestic abuse. Smith allegedly assaulted his 21-year-old girlfriend and severely beat a two-year-old Shiba Inu belonging to the girlfriend’s sister. Multiple attacks on the dog allegedly occurred in the last few months. “As we have seen in the past, the brutality associated with domestic violence all too often affects other members of the household, including pets,” says Joe Pentangelo, Assistant Director, ASPCA Humane Law Enforcement. The dog, named Michigan, was brought to the ASPCA’s Bergh Memorial Animal Hospital (BMAH) on March 25 in a state of distress. ASPCA veterinarians discovered that she had sustained 12 fractured ribs and suffered from trauma. Michigan is currently recovering at BMAH and will be reunited with her owner. Smith was charged with one count of aggravated animal cruelty and assault. If convicted, he faces up to two years in jail and a $2,000 fine. If you know of an animal who is being hurt, please report it—those who assault animals often abuse the people in their lives, too. To report animal cruelty in New York City, contact the ASPCA’s anonymous tip line at (877) THE-ASPCA. Visit our Report Cruelty FAQ to learn how to report cruelty elsewhere.

Tell Lowe’s to Stop Selling Glue Traps!!

March 21, 2009

Glue traps are among the cruelest pest-control devices on the market today and Lowe’s is selling them. Animals who get stuck to them suffer for days before they finally die of starvation, dehydration, self-mutilation, and shock. Patches of skin, fur, or feathers are torn from their bodies as they frantically struggle to escape the relentless adhesive.

Many animals resort to chewing off their own limbs in a desperate attempt to free themselves from the traps, and others get their noses, mouths, or beaks stuck in the glue and suffocate. Imagine being stuck in a giant glue trap and having to gnaw off your own leg just to break free. It’s imperative that Lowe’s end their glue trap sales now!

“Nontarget” animals routinely fall prey to these cruel devices too. PETA fields calls on a daily basis from distraught customers who have discovered that birds, squirrels, and even their animal companions have become hopelessly stuck in glue traps.

PETA has presented Lowe’s with graphic photos and video footage of small animals, including birds, who suffered painful injuries and died lingering deaths after being ensnared by the cruel traps. But so far, not this, nor the fact that other companies—including CVS, Rite Aid, Albertsons, and Safeway—have banned glue traps because they are so cruel has persuaded Lowe’s to do the right thing and get rid of them once and for all. Go to this link where you can watch the video, and send a letter to Lowe’s: http://getactive.peta.org/campaign/lowes_glue_traps .

McDonald’s Abuses Chickens

March 21, 2009

McDonald’s is unbelieveable. In the U.S., chickens killed by McDonald’s suppliers are slaughtered using an outdated method that results in extreme suffering. As the biggest seller of chicken meat in the U.S.,McDonald’s has the responsability-and the ability-to reduce this abuse. It wouldn’t cost McDonald’s a thing to switch to a less cruel slaughtering method. But they choose not to. If you go to McDonald’s,don’t buy any of their chicken items until they stop the abuse.

The Fur and Exotic Skin industries are outrageous!!

March 21, 2009

The uses of  fur and exotic skin is out of control. More and more animals are being killed, including rabbits, alligators, and snakes. Alligators and snake skins are being used to make things like purses, while rabbit fur is being used to make things like fur coats. It is terrible that there are people who are willing to kill these animals, just for the money they’ll recieve. It is cruel.

Sago Palm Plant Kills Puppy

March 20, 2009

It’s hard to believe a houseplant could harm a tough cookie like the Woytek family’s Lab mix, Amber. A survivor of Hurricane Ike, the young pup was diagnosed with distemper in the months after her adoption from the Houston SPCA in September 2008. But according to Laurie Woytek, Amber defeated the often fatal virus—and went on to form a tight bond with her canine “sister” and partner-in-crime, Scout, a one-year-old Rhodesian ridgeback mix.

Early last month, Laurie discovered that Amber had eaten parts of a sago palm plant. Sago palm—with its dark green leaves and hairy trunk—has become a popular houseplant in recent years, but unbeknownst to many green-thumbed pet parents, it’s also highly toxic to cats and dogs.

Immediately ill, Amber was hospitalized at a nearby emergency clinic. Says Laurie, “I was very scared, but thought, ‘She’s tough—she’ll make it through.’” After several days in the hospital, the emergency veterinarian delivered the heartbreaking news to the Woyteks—Amber had developed jaundice and life-threatening liver failure.

“We took Amber to our regular veterinarian to discuss our options with him,” explains Laurie. “She suffered seizures in the car on the way, and we ultimately made the very difficult, yet humane decision to let her go.”

Sadly, Amber’s story is all too common. Since 2003, the ASPCA has seen an increase by more than 200 percent of sago palm and cycad poisonings, and 50 to 75 percent of those ingestions resulted in fatalities. According to Dr. Sharon Gwaltney-Brant, veterinary toxicologist and vice president of the ASPCA Animal Poison Control Center, all parts of the plant are toxic, not just the seeds or nuts, and common signs of ingestion include vomiting, diarrhea, weakness, depression, seizures and liver failure.

Before the Woytek family said their final goodbyes to Amber, they took her home to see her best buddy, Scout. “As Amber lay still on the floor, Scout kept nudging her as if to say, ‘C’mon, get up,’” Laurie says. “They weren’t just ‘sissies’—as we referred to them—they were best friends.”

“It was the hardest thing I’ve ever had to do,” reflects Laurie. “Amber is truly missed and will forever be in our hearts. She was our little princess.”

In memory of Amber, and to mark the end of National Poison Prevention Week, March 15-21, the ASPCA reminds all pet parents to stay informed about protecting pets from accidental poisonings. Please read our poison prevention tips online.

ASPCA Guide to a Pet-Friendly Valentine’s Day

January 30, 2009

Furry valentines across the country will be party to all sorts of romantic evenings at home this February 14—are you prepared to keep your pet safe?

Two common holiday hazards to stay alert to are chocolate and lilies, warn our poison control experts. In the week prior to Valentine’s Day 2008, cases involving chocolate ingestion increased by 74%—a number comparable only to cases seen during the Christmas and New Year’s holidays. And bouquet senders and receivers alike are often unaware of the dangers of lilies.

Says ASPCA pet poison prevention expert Dana Farbman, CVT, “We do see an increase in calls regarding traditional holiday gifts, particularly in the few days leading up to and after Valentine’s Day—right when those bouquets and lovely boxes of chocolate arrive.”

Here are some helpful tips from the ASPCA Guide to a Pet-Friendly Valentine’s Day:

- When sending a floral arrangement, request that it contain no lilies, as all species within the plant genera Lilium are toxic to cats. And please de-thorn your roses, as their sharp, woody spines can hurt your pet if chewed, stepped on or swallowed.

- Stow chocolates in paw-proof drawers and cabinets. The darker the chocolate, the more likely a pet who’s ingested it will suffer vomiting, diarrhea, hyperactivity, seizures and an elevated heart rate.

- Spilled wine is nothing to cry over—until a curious pet laps it up. Because animals are smaller than humans, a little bit of alcohol can do a lot of harm, causing vomiting, lack of coordination, difficulty breathing and even coma.

- Gather up tape, ribbons, cellophane and balloons after you open presents—long, stringy and “fun-to-chew” items can get lodged in your pet’s throat or digestive tract.

For more tips, read our complete online guide. As always, if you suspect your pet has ingested a toxic substance, contact your veterinarian or the APCC’s 24-hour hotline at 8-8-8-426-4435.

Effective Immediately: Please Discontinue Use of Peanut Butter Products, Pet Parents!

January 24, 2009

In light of last week’s FDA recall, which traced sources of Salmonella contamination to a plant owned by Peanut Corporation of America, the ASPCA is advising pet parents to temporarily discontinue the use of peanut butter products.

A popular treat for dogs, peanut butter is commonly stuffed into chewable activity toys. While healthy adult companion dogs are relatively resistant to Salmonella bacteria, pets with health issues, young puppies and older pooches with compromised immune systems may be at greater risk. “Pet parents should wash their hands after handling any potentially contaminated food and immediately consult with a veterinarian if any symptoms are noticed in their pets,” says the ASPCA’s Dr. Steven Hansen, Senior Vice President, Animal Health Services. Signs to watch out for in dogs include vomiting, diarrhea, fever, lethargy and drooling or panting. Cats may develop a high fever with vague, non-specific clinical signs.

In addition, pet parents handling a contaminated peanut butter product may also develop food poisoning. “Salmonella can be passed between humans and pets,” says Dr. Louise Murray, ASPCA Director of Medicine. “Adult cats are highly resistant, and most dogs infected with the bacterium appear normal, but may pass Salmonella in their feces, which can infect people or other pets. Therefore it’s essential that pet parents take steps to protect both themselves and their animal companions from infection.”

For a complete list of recalled products, please visit the FDA online. Do check often, as the list is regularly udpated. If you suspect that your pet may have ingested or has become sick after ingesting a recalled product, please contact your local veterinarian or the ASPCA Animal Poison Control Center at 888-426-4435.

A sweet Petfinder succes story

January 24, 2009

It was love at first click. Christy Linkous had been looking for a dachshund on Petfinder.com, and when she came upon Callie—and took one look at her sweet, furry face, big, floppy ears and short little legs—she was hooked.

Christy quickly contacted the shelter where Callie was being cared for, figuring that such an amazing dog would be snatched up right away. But the manager’s response surprised her. “Not only was Callie still there, but her days were numbered because she had been there almost as long as they could hold her,” Christy recalls. No matter that the shelter was three hours away—Christy and her husband, Randy, decided without hesitation to adopt Callie.

The first meeting between pooch and parents was not what Christy had imagined. Callie was covered in fleas and dander, and she was so thin that her ribs were clearly visible. Callie had been a stray, but when she met Christy, her tail wagged happily, as if she knew she was about to go to a good home.

Actually, not quite yet—there was one quick pit stop to be made. “We wrapped her in the blanket we had brought for her, and took her straight to the groomer for a flea bath and a little TLC,” says Callie’s new mama.

Now, four years later, Callie has taken over the Linkous home in Lexington, KY. “It’s her house—she just lets us live here,” says Christy with a laugh. Miss Callie keeps her doggie sister, a rescued yellow Lab, on her toes. “Callie spends her days napping in the recliner and always has her belly full. Everyone loves her because she’s just so sweet.”

Man Arrested for Allegedly Throwing Canine to Her Death

September 21, 2008

Thanks to the diligence of the ASPCA Humane Law Enforcement (HLE) department, justice will finally be served to the man who allegedly threw his ex-girlfriend’s small dog to her death. The incident occurred on September 14, 2007—a year ago this week.

On that day, Farah Benoit returned to the Brooklyn apartment she had shared with former boyfriend Sherman Haynes to collect her belongings, including her three-year-old shih tzu, Zahara. Haynes would not allow Benoit into the building and began tossing her possessions—including clothing and a heavy cabinet—out of his third-floor window. Witnesses stated that Haynes grabbed Zahara by the throat and then threw the canine to the sidewalk below.

Benoit rushed Zahara to Manhattan’s Animal Medical Center, but with multiple broken legs, collapsed lungs and internal bleeding from the impact, the 15-pound dog soon succumbed to her injuries.

Haynes fled, and for a year avoided both the NYPD and HLE investigators seeking to question him. However, HLE continued to work the case, striving to pinpoint Haynes’s location. His use of a social networking website, plus information from the U.S. Postal Inspection Service and the New York State Department of Motor Vehicles, ultimately led ASPCA Special Agent Peter Rivas to the door of Haynes’s new Manhattan apartment, where he was arrested on September 5, 2008.

Haynes was arraigned the following Friday and charged with aggravated animal cruelty, a felony. He also was charged with reckless endangerment, reckless endangerment of property, menacing, criminal possession of a weapon and criminal mischief. The NYPD slapped him with an additional charge of aggravated harassment for an unrelated incident. Haynes, 27, faces up to seven years in prison for the combined charges.

“This case is another sad example of a pet being used as a pawn for revenge in a domestic violence situation,” says Joseph Pentangelo, Assistant Director, ASPCA Humane Law Enforcement. “We see this all too often. I urge anyone leaving an abusive relationship to take their pets with them or place them, at least temporarily, with family or friends. Do not leave them behind, where they become easy targets.”

In an effort to address the high incidence of pets being harmed in domestic violence disputes, about a dozen states—including New York—have passed laws allowing pets to be included in orders of protection. Read more about the link between domestic violence and animal abuse.

Hurricane Ike Update: ASPCA Deploys Disaster Response Team to Texas, Issues Grants

September 21, 2008

Fresh off a 10-day rescue effort in Louisiana following Hurricane Gustav, the ASPCA Disaster Response Team arrived in Texas this Monday, September 15, to respond to shelters and animals in need in the aftermath of Hurricane Ike. An ASPCA disaster response trailer arrived at the incident command center in Beaumont, TX, on Wednesday. The team is ready to lend its expertise in animal sheltering, field rescues and field assessments.

The ASPCA Disaster Response Team includes a veterinarian, veterinary technicians, disaster responders and sheltering professionals, and was deployed at the request of the Texas State Animal Resource Team (TXSART). “We are working closely with TXSART and other credentialed animal care agencies to assist and provide resources,” says Sandy Monterose, ASPCA Senior Director, Community Outreach.

Thanks to the generosity of our supporters, the ASPCA has dispersed and pledged more than $75,000 in emergency grant funding to animal-related organizations in Texas, Alabama and Louisiana following Hurricanes Ike and Gustav. Please see our latest press release for more details.

If you’d like to support our efforts to help animals who’ve been touched by events beyond their control, please read more about our ASPCA Disaster Relief Fund.

Halt the Plan to Kill Wild Horse and Burros

August 8, 2008

Over the past few weeks, countless news articles have circulated regarding the BLM’s dilemma of caring for 32,000 warehoused wild horses and the announcement that in addition to halting gathers, the agency may begin euthanizing horses in holding centers in order to “balance the budget.” Please take action to urge the BLM to develop humane, sustainable programs for managing these animals on the range and in holding centers.

There are many options that would both significantly reduce the costs of wild horse management and improve the welfare and conditions of these horses through immunocontraception. Studies have shown that wild horse management costs could be significantly decreased by treating more mares with the immunocontraceptive Porcine Zona Pellucida (“PZP”) and returning them to the range, rather than detaining them indefinitely in holding centers.

TAKE ACTION
The agency has always favored “quick fixes” such as capture and removal programs, rather than developing sustainable long term in-the-wild management programs, but we cannot allow these animals to pay the ultimate price for the BLM’s short-sighted mistakes. The BLM is currently accepting public comment until August 31, on the wild horse and burro management. Please send an email to Jim Caswell, Director of the BLM, to keep wild horses and burros on our public lands safe.

And don’t forget to tell your friends and family how they can help, too.

Thank you for all you do for horses, and for all animals.

Sassy and Sniffer

March 25, 2008

On Easter Sunday of 2008,I went to my uncle’s house to celebrate Easter.Out of nowhere comes a cat.I went up to her while she was meowing and I petted her. Then,I decided to name her Sassy. She was happy, but hungry. After a while,my mom gave me a rib to give to her and so I did.I put the rib by my uncle’s driveway as my mom suggested, then I went back to my uncle’s backyard.A few minutes later,Sassy came back to the backyard meowing,so I got up and took her where I put the rib.I looked down and noticed that the rib was gone. Then,I turned around and looked down, and I saw a cute little puppy!! I was so excited.I realized that he had eaten the bone since he was hungry to.I named him Sniffer!!I got another rib from my mom and gave it to Sassy so she could eat the meat. Then, when she finished the meat,I gave the bone to Sniffer. That was a wonderful day that I will never forget!!

ASPCA AIDS IN ANTI-CRUELTY RAID OF RECORD PROPORTIONS

March 21, 2008

In one of the largest anti-cruelty raids on recent record, 516 ailing cats were removed from the property known as the Tiger Ranch Cat Sanctuary in Tarentum, PA, 20 miles northeast of Pittsburgh. On the evening of March 13, a team of 120 ASPCA and PSPCA animal welfare experts found multiple buildings filled with hundreds of sick, malnourished cats living in squalor. Deceased cats were also discovered throughout the property, 110 of them removed from freezers and graves.

“This is by far the worst case we’ve ever encountered,” said Howard Nelson, PSPCA CEO. “Our primary concern is to get these animals the care and treatment they so desperately need.”

Dr. Melinda Merck, ASPCA Senior Director, comments, “The overcrowding and unsanitary conditions, the flea and parasite infestation, along with the stress of competing for food and coping with untreated illnesses, have resulted in severe conditions.” The majority of the cats seem friendly and well-socialized.

The cats have been transferred to the Clarion County Humane Society where they’re being treated by veterinarians with the goal of being made available for future adoption. They will remain in quarantine for at least 30 days.

The sanctuary’s owner, Linn Marie, age 45,has been arrested and charged with multiple counts of animal cruelty.

More about Puppy Mills(feat.Brittney Spears and Paris Hilton)

December 16, 2007

People like Brittney Spears and Paris Hilton, buy their dogs from a petstore called “Pets Of Bel-Air”,in Bel-Air.Little do they know that that pet store supports Puppy Mills. What are Puppy Mills? You may ask.Puppy Mills are horrible places that keep puppy’s locked up in cages with other puppy’s,with the cages stcked on top of eachother, and the puppy’s are unfead, unwatered, and unbathed. The Humane Society went undercover to “Pets Of Bel-Air” where they talked to a couple employees and the manager. They said “never tell a customer that a puppy is sick, just say that it has the sniffle because that sounds cuter”.They even lied to the HSUS undercover officer and said “we don’t support Puppy Mills”.But that most definetely is a lie.If you go to any pet store, they pretty much all support Puppy Mills.Would you like to get one from there?I sure wouldn’t.Think about it.
